About Denver Home Efficiency

Who runs this site, where the order, rebate rules and prices come from, and what we do and don't do.

Denver Home Efficiency helps you plan home energy efficiency upgrades for a Denver house in the right order and stack the rebates that go with them.

It is not affiliated with Xcel Energy, the Colorado Energy Office or DRCOG. Whole Home Efficiency and Home Energy Squad are Xcel Energy programs. Power Ahead Colorado is run by DRCOG.

What we do and don't do

We don't do energy audits, insulation, air sealing or duct sealing. For the audit, book Xcel's Home Energy Squad Plus. For insulation and air sealing, hire from Xcel's Whole Home Efficiency contractor list.

When you send photos, the request goes to the Denver heating and cooling contractor that does our estimates and installs. It prices heat pumps, furnaces, heat pump water heaters and panels, and it is on Xcel's Whole Home Efficiency participating contractor list. The photos on this site are from its installs.

Where the order and the numbers come from

The ages in the planner follow ENERGY STAR's replacement guidance: a heat pump or air conditioner past 10 years, a furnace or boiler past 15, a water heater past 10.

Rebate rules and amounts come from Xcel's Whole Home Efficiency page and information sheet, Xcel's 2026 rebate summary, the Colorado Energy Office and Power Ahead Colorado, read on October 13, 2026. They cover work invoiced in 2026 and can change at any time.

The planner uses a typical heat pump size from our recent estimates. It leaves the attic rebate out of the total, because it depends on the attic's size and its insulation today, which the audit measures. Amounts Xcel has to confirm for your house, such as the 25% bonus where Xcel gas doesn't heat it, are shown beside the total and never added to it.

Running-cost comparisons use Xcel's residential gas and electric rates in effect on October 6, 2026.

Prices are typical ranges from our recent estimates in the Denver area, before rebates, rounded to the nearest $100. Half of recent Denver estimates fall inside each range. The ranges for a heat pump with a new gas furnace and for a ducted heat pump follow our current pricing instead. We have no prices for insulation or air sealing, so the planner shows Xcel's rebate rules for them instead.
